Lecturers in APU Cheap and fireable is from the administrations’point of view probably nicer.

LecturersThe university is now changing the employment terms for their language teachers, which has been complained about by the language teacher’s union. The confusion and unsecurity the short-term employment has led to, among other things, that the best Japanese teacher I have ever had in APU, quit a few months ago. Yes, maybe he/she could have got the contract prolonged, but if you’re a good and recognized teacher, who wants to stay around in APU without job security if you can go elsewhere? It’s a tragical loss.
Maybe it would be another story if the contract they receive makes it easier to fire them if they do a bad job, instead of just giving them contracts that will expire after a short time, without being able to guarantee a renew. Again; if you’re a good teacher, do you want to stay around in APU, fearing for your job everyday and use time searching for other opportunities? Even if the university means it well, it should understand that this is not a good way to attract the best teachers. But maybe attracting the best teachers was not the goal anyway. Cheap and fireable is from the administrations’ point of view probably nicer. And quality doesn’t come for free.

Since we’re not experts on either cases, we would appreciate others commenting with information and opinions so we as students also can be more aware of what’s going on.
By the way, as far as I know, there hasn’t been a single student participating or asked about the new reform that are coming. Why? Wouldn’t it be nice for the administration to cooperate with students and teachers, and find a solution that we all can be happy with?
Thoughts for the weekend: Student Union 学生組織In other international universities around the world, there’s a student union. A student union is democratically elected by all the students of a university and the leader are empowered to act on behalf of all the students when dealing with problems. A student union is also, in most countries, synonymeous with free legal advice, maybe there’s a cafeteria run by the union, and so on. All in the interest of helping students. If you are unfairly treated, or in the worst case, harassed, or if you feel something should be changed at the university, you can go to the student union and they can help you out in various ways.
So what about in APU?
There’s no student union for sure (because the university doesn’t allow it). If you have a problem, it’s you against the university. If you have been sexually harassed, but the university don’t believe you, there’s no student union to help you out with going to the police. You have to do it yourself.
So the questions for this weekend are:
Are there no problems at APU that could need to be addressed by a student union?
Why do you think APU doesn’t allow establishment of a student union?世界中の他の国際大学には学生会（学生の組織）がある。学生組織は大学の全学生によって民主主義的に選ばれ、そのようにして選出されたリーダーは、問題を解決する際に、全学生を代表して行動する権限を与えられる。学生組織はほとんどの国では、無料の法的アドバイス、組織が運営するカフェテリアなどといったものと同じ意味合いである。すべては学生を助けるためである。もし不公平な扱いを受けたり、最悪な場合、悩まされたり、大学に関することで何か変化が必要だと感じたら、学生組織に行けば彼らは様々な方法で助けの手をさしのべてくれるのである。
APUでは？ 学生組織はない（大学が許可していないからである）。もし何か問題があれば学生が責められる。もしセクハラを受けても、大学は学生を信じない。学生が警察へ通報することを助けるような学生組織はここにはないのだ。学生は自分自身でそれをしなければならない。
